The threat of a world war is looming: engage in the struggle against imperialism and for international socialism!

The International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) in Australia is hosting an online meeting via Zoom at 4 p.m. (AEDT) on Saturday March 12 to discuss the urgent need to build an international anti-war movement of youth, students and workers as the danger of nuclear war increases amid the escalating crisis in Ukraine.

The IYSSE urges students and young people from Australia, New Zealand, across the region and around the world to participate in the meeting, which will consider the life and death issues of billions of people around the world. Register for the meeting by clicking on this link.

At no time since World War II has the threat of a nuclear exchange been so present. Despite the provocations of the American powers and NATO, the Russian invasion of Ukraine must be opposed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken the unprecedented post-Cold War action of placing the country’s nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. Putin and the part of the Russian capitalist class he represents cling to the illusion that they can alter US and NATO foreign policy and recognize Russian security interests in Ukraine through threats.

The catastrophe triggered by the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 cannot be avoided by the reactionary ideology of Russian nationalism which serves the interests of the country’s oligarchs represented by Putin.

Despite the reckless actions of Putin and the Russian ruling elite, the main responsibility for the current crisis and the threat of nuclear war lies with US imperialism and its NATO allies. For decades, the United States and NATO have engaged in provocative militaristic and economic intrigue in Eastern Europe and around the world.

In 2014, a US-backed coup brought an anti-Russian government to power in Ukraine. NATO has been engaged since 1991 in a relentless expansion towards Eastern Europe. The United States has taken the lead in planning for the use of nuclear weapons by withdrawing from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, stationing offensive missiles in Romania and Poland, and undertaking a multi-billion dollar expansion. US nuclear forces dollars.

Last week, belligerent war rhetoric from politicians and officials in the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia and other imperialist countries accompanied economic warfare and the shipment of arms from the NATO in Ukraine. All of this points to a de facto NATO war against Russia.

The current crisis was born out of a very specific context: the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. COVID has exacerbated social and political crisis globally and resulted in nearly one million deaths in the United States alone, according to official figures. The Omicron variant of Sars-Cov-2 has seen more than 2,000 Americans die every day for the past month.

Governments around the world are forgoing scientifically-guided measures to stem the spread of the virus because they are hampering the profit-making ability of the small and wealthy capitalist oligarchy. For the ultra-rich, who have been gorging themselves during the pandemic, the lives and livelihoods of working people and their families are sacrifices that must be made to continue to dominate the world’s resources.

In the face of this growing social polarization, the administration of US President Joe Biden aims to build unity within the country and project conflict outward through war. Emerging from World War II as the world’s dominant superpower, the United States is currently experiencing massive economic, political and social upheaval. He sees Russia and China’s economic rise as the main threats to his plans to retain his position as global hegemon. As Leon Trotsky, co-leader of the 1917 Russian Revolution with Vladmir Lenin and founder of the Fourth International, said in 1934:

American capitalism faces the same problems that drove Germany in 1914 down the road to war. The world is divided? It must be redivided. For Germany, it was a question of “organizing Europe”. The United States must “organize” the world. History confronts humanity with the volcanic eruption of US imperialism.

But the crisis in the United States is only the most extreme manifestation of the crisis of world capitalism.

In order to understand how to fight war, young people and students must understand the objective conditions that lead to war. Militarism and armed conflict do not arise from the minds of individual capitalist politicians. They are only reflections of a much deeper process that necessarily emerges from the contradictions of the capitalist profit system itself. Above all, war emerges because of the division of the global economy into competing nation-states, whose ruling capitalist elites vie for control of resources, markets and spheres of influence.

World war can therefore only be averted by the action of the international working class overthrowing the predatory capitalist system and replacing it with world socialism. Young people and students must reject all attempts to divide young people and workers on the basis of nationality. The international working class must adopt an independent position in response to the escalating crisis. We must oppose imperialism without adapting to Russian nationalism, and oppose Russian nationalism without adapting to imperialism.

Young people must look to the global working class as the only social force capable of ending capitalism and, therefore, of ending war and the social misery it brings. As the youth and student wing of the International Committee of the Fourth International, the IYSSE insists that a Marxist revolutionary party must be built to politically lead the working class to resolve the crisis of capitalism through the establishment of a socialist system based on social need, not private profit.

This perspective and the historical questions arising from it – including around the key strategic experience of the Russian Revolution of 1917 that ended World War I – will be discussed at the next online meeting of the IYSSE. To learn more about IYSSE’s program to build an international anti-war movement of workers and youth and find out how you can join this fight, attend our meeting on Saturday, March 12 at 4 p.m.!
