The king of 90s strategy, MicroProse, is back with a mix of wargaming and Cold War RTS

Set in 1989 in Germany during an imaginary the Warsaw Pact (opens in a new tab) invasion, Regiments puts you in command of extended real-time combat between Cold War forces. It’s a hybrid of RTS and tactical wargame that breaks with the traditions of both genres by being single-player only. Regiments places particular emphasis on dynamic multi-day battles that allow you to reactively call in reinforcements.

I watched Regiments last year, when it was in open beta, but it launched this week – and developer Bird’s Eye Games and publisher MicroProse have come a long way since then.

Regiments focuses on an interesting and unique single-player experience. These types of realistic, high-fidelity RTS games most often try to be everything: Balancing single-player scenarios, multiplayer, and even campaign length mechanics. Regiments knows it just wants to be a good, well-balanced single-player wargame.

It has a plot-driven campaign with four large and three small missions, all of which are multi-stage battles. Then there are four skirmish game modes, each playable on one of 19 maps. That might not seem like a lot, and I have a feeling first impressions are going to see the Regiments end up being criminally underrated among strategy enthusiasts who repeat a refrain for “more content.” The trick is that unique “battles” in regiments are multi-day, historically informed affairs, divided into active and passive phases.

As you progress through each day of real-time combat, you’re pressured to take on as many strategic and tactical objectives as possible before nightfall (or before the enemy forces you to take a moment and to regroup). During this lull in the fighting, you as a commander must manage the limited resources available to your regiment and call in specialist detachments from other regiments to fill the gaps you need. You could call in more infantry as an armored regiment that needs to hold ground, for example. It’s a beat that should resonate with any military history buff.

Regiments force you to take the unofficial US Marine Corps mantra “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome” to heart. Not enough basic battle tanks? Take to the skies and use anti-tank missiles against enemy tanks. The enemy has air superiority? Switch to a narrower attack so your limited anti-aircraft can flourish.

To this end, Regiments has a hundred unique units divided into six factions (USSR, USA, UK, East Germany, West Germany, Belgium). Each faction except the UK has 3-5 unique regiments to play with and a dozen or more task forces to call in as reinforcements.

If you’re a British fan, fret not, as the developer says “the full integration of British Army of the Rhine forces and the addition of motorized infantry and air assault support remain our priority medium-term objectives in the coming months.”
