Millionaire Renovates Cold War Radar Unit to Hunt UFOs

Millionaires are like the rest of us — when they need help fixing their decommissioned Cold War-era radar units to detect UFOs, they turn to the good folks at Reddit.

As spotted by Vicean anonymous Reddit post featuring a gigantic British AMES Type 84 radar set users on a quest to unmask the mysterious person who bought it – and their equally obvious reason for doing so.

“To help!” the user wrote on his Anonymous Reddit post, featuring a photo of the Cold War juggernaut. “I want to bring this back to life.”

Later, when someone asked the original poster what he wanted to do with the giant pile of junk, user replied“because I’ve convinced myself that it can be a lot of fun to use in an attempt to find UFOs?”

Redditors figured out who was behind the post pretty quickly, as there are only five Type 84 radar units like this in Britain: none other than entrepreneur and roboticist William Sachiti.

Sachiti, who has already made a name for himself in the UK for founding self-driving delivery startup Kar-go, later confirmed Vice that he was well behind the post.

Sachiti told the publication he was only joking that he wanted to use the machine – which was previously used by the British Air Force to detect enemy craft and weapons – to hunt aliens.

“It’s not for me to decide what is the best use for it in the modern world,” he said. “As long as it doesn’t hurt and it’s not intrusive…I have the technology…let’s give it a life.”

The main reason Sachiti is retrofitting the Type 84, however, is much more mundane.

He said Vice that when he bought a disused Royal Air Force base for his company Kar-go earlier this year, ownership came with the discontinued radar unit.

Because the Type 84 is considered a historic monument by the British government, it couldn’t be scrapped, so it sat unused for decades – until Sachiti decided to do something with it.

“Because there was nobody here for a while,” said Sachiti Vice“It was slowly starting to degrade. And for me, every time I looked at it, I was like, ‘something has to be done’.”

So he took to Reddit to try and find a fix for the decaying monster, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Because it’s only been a week since its first post, the Type 84 is not operational again IAgain. It’ll probably take a lot of tinkering to make sure it doesn’t wipe out local TV airwaves, as Sachiti explained to Vicethanks to the staggering amount of ionized radiation it produces during operation.

But given the level of expertise Sachiti’s post has already attracted, it’s probably only a matter of time before he starts scanning the skies for visitors from other worlds.
